2023 Mid-Atlantic Broomball Tournament Results

Saturday, November 4 saw all 11 teams in action. One men’s pool played in the morning and early afternoon, the other men’s pool played in the afternoon into the evening. The women had the enjoyment of playing four games spanning the course of the entire day. Men’s Pool A saw the Bombers of Ohio go 3 for 3 to claim the top spot, with the Eastern Eagles’ morning victory over Corruption helping elevate the former’s spot to second in the pool to play for the A championship. Pool B was the source of a little bit of results chaos, as a youthful Southern Heat squad pulled off two big wins to take the first spot in their pool; they claimed their spot via tiebreaker by virtue of defeating Cleveland, who also came out of Pool B with a 2-1 record.

With a double round-robin on the agenda, the women’s teams had plenty of opportunities to get familiar with one another. The established roster of the ABA B Champion Wicked Sisters came out of the day with a 4-0 record, having not surrendered a goal all day. The other spot in the women’s final was heavily contested, with PWBC and LWYMMD (both sporting amazing jerseys for the tourney, we should add) splitting their matches but PWBC advancing on a better goal differential.

The B bracket of the men’s tourney Sunday featured some of the most excitement the B side has seen in Mid-Atlantic. Top Shelf edged out Corruption to start the day, while Harvest zoomed past PBC to set up the B final. With both teams exchanging goals in regulation (and an early controversial Harvest shot off a part of the framework), the game needed overtime, where Top Shelf’s Milton Jones knocked home the winner off a great Michael Garlow pass across the crease for the 2-1 win and the B title.

The women’s final saw PWBC end the Wicked Sisters’ shutout run with a hard Kelly Roofner shot taking a deflection home for a 1-0 PWBC lead. Steph Taylor provided an answer with a dazzling top corner shot to draw things level, where it would remain at halftime. Midway through the second half, Cass Guthrie roofed a power play chance in front of net to make it 2-1, and would add another with PWBC’s goalie pulled for a 3-1 lead the Wicked Sisters would see out for the women’s championship.

The men’s A bracket featured two surprisingly lopsided semifinal scores, with the Bombers scoring some late goals to defeat Cleveland by a 5-0 tally and the Eastern Eagles storming Southern Heat with 5 second half goals to claim a 6-0 win to set up for all the marbles a Pool A rematch which the Bombers had won handily. Kyle Kaminski’s snipe just inside the far-side post gave the Bombers a vital early lead, and he connected with Don Somers on a second goal to give the Bombers a 2-0 cushion heading into halftime. The Eagles refused to go away quietly with plenty of second half pressure on the Bombers’ net, but the Bombers battened down the hatches on defense and kept Cass Guthrie’s (told you) net clean of any goals in the championship, giving the Bombers a 2-0 win and the top prize on the men’s side.

Once again, we thank the wonderful folks at the Erie Sports Commission and LECOM Sports Park for helping us put this great tourney on and run smoothly throughout the weekend. We also want to thank Dave, our full-time ref and absolute hero, as well as everybody who stepped up to referee games or help broadcast games over the course of the weekend. We hope to see you all again next year!
